Check how much Claude usage you have left.
Claude Code, claude.ai and the Claude app all draw on one set of plan limits. Here is where to check your Claude Code usage and what is left, and how the 5-hour and weekly limits work.
Type /usage in Claude Code to see your plan usage bars. On claude.ai or in the Claude app, open Settings > Usage to see how much of your 5-hour session limit and your weekly limits you have used, and how long until the session resets. Your use of claude.ai, Claude Code and the Claude desktop app counts toward the same limits.

Where to see your Claude usage.
There are four places to look. The first three are built in and need no setup.
| Where | How to open it | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code in a terminal | Type /usage. /cost and /stats open the same screen. | Plan usage bars and activity stats. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, also a breakdown of what counted toward your limits. |
| claude.ai or the Claude app | Settings > Usage | Progress bars for the current 5-hour session, with the time left until it resets, and for your weekly limits. |
| Claude desktop app, Code tab | The usage ring near the message box | Your plan usage for the period, on plans with usage limits. Anthropic's pages place this ring slightly differently, so look for it around the message box. |
| A status line you set up | A short command in ~/.claude/settings.json (see below) | 5-hour and 7-day percent used, on Pro and Max plans, after the first reply in a session. |
The breakdown inside /usage is an estimate. Anthropic says it is worked out from the session history on this computer, so it leaves out use on other devices and on claude.ai. The plan usage bars cover your account.
Settings > Usage works on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. Usage-based Enterprise plans have no fixed usage limits. They are charged by consumption, which Settings > Usage also shows.
How the 5-hour and weekly limits work.
Anthropic's help center puts it in one sentence: “Paid plans have two types of usage limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and weekly limits that reset once every week.”
- Chats on claude.ai, Claude Code sessions and the Claude desktop app all count toward the same limit. A long coding session leaves less for chat, and the other way round.
- Settings > Usage shows a weekly bar for all models, plus one for Fable if your plan includes it.
- On Max plans, Anthropic says the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.
- Claude Code shows warning messages as you get close to any limit.
Check the reset time Anthropic shows you. Settings > Usage shows the time left in the current session. When Claude Code stops at a limit, its message names the reset time, for example:
You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm
Show your usage in Claude Code's status line.
A status line is the bar at the bottom of Claude Code. It runs a small command you choose and shows what the command prints. Claude Code passes that command your 5-hour and 7-day usage in fields named rate_limits, so the line can show them while you work. It runs on your Mac and uses no API tokens.
Before you start, check three things:
- You sign in with a claude.ai Pro or Max subscription. Anthropic's docs name only Pro and Max for these fields, and logins with an API key don't get them.
- The fields arrive only after Claude's first reply in a session. Until then the line reads
5h: -% · 7d: -%. A figure also drops out once its limit resets, and shows as-%until the next reply. - The command uses
jq, a small tool that reads JSON. Typejq --versionin Terminal. If it isn't found, install it first.
Add this statusLine key to ~/.claude/settings.json, the settings file in your home folder. Add it to the file's existing top-level object instead of pasting over the whole file, and keep only one statusLine key. The file must stay strict JSON: no comments and no trailing commas.
{ "statusLine": { "type": "command", "command": "jq -r '\"5h: \\(.rate_limits.five_hour.used_percentage // \"-\")% · 7d: \\(.rate_limits.seven_day.used_percentage // \"-\")%\"'" } }
The line shows the share you have used, not what is left. 5h: 42.5% · 7d: 10% means 57.5% of the 5-hour session and 90% of the week are still available. Each status line belongs to one session and shows only in that session's terminal.
If you'd rather not edit the file, type /statusline in Claude Code followed by a description of what you want, and Claude Code sets it up for you.
What happens when you reach a limit.
If you keep the session open, current versions of Claude Code can pick the task up again by themselves. In Anthropic's words, Claude Code “waits in the open session and continues the task on its own after the limit resets.” This is on by default in interactive sessions signed in with a claude.ai subscription, through the autoContinueAtUsageLimit setting. It does not start on its own when the reset is more than a day away, as a weekly limit can be. In that case /rate-limit-options lets you choose to wait.
If you can't wait, Pro and Max plans can turn on usage credits under Settings > Usage to keep working past the limit, paid as you go. On Pro and Max, typing /usage-credits in Claude Code opens that page on claude.ai.
Why one help article says /status.
One Anthropic help article, about using Claude Code with a Pro or Max plan, says: “Monitor your remaining allocation using the /status command.” The current Claude Code docs describe /status differently: it opens the Status tab with your version, model, account and connectivity, and plan limits sit under /usage.
The two sources disagree. If /status doesn't show your limits, use /usage.
The no-setup option.
Cowork Island is a macOS 14+ app that keeps your AI agent sessions from supported tools in a notch panel, showing the state of each one, so you can see when a session “Needs you”. When one does, the island opens by itself by default, unless that session's terminal or app is already in front.
The same panel has usage meters for your own Claude and Codex plans: the 5-hour and weekly limits that Anthropic and OpenAI set, not limits of the app. They are read from files on your Mac, with no API call and no credential read. For Claude, turn on the opt-in step “Read usage from Claude Code's status line”, offered when you first open the app. It adds a command to Claude Code's status line and chains any status line you already have, so the one above can stay. Claude Code sends these figures only on Pro and Max plans, while a session runs. Codex limits come from Codex's own session files on the Mac, with nothing to turn on.
Free keeps a one-line usage summary in the panel header and shows one session card at a time; Pro adds detailed usage meters per account with reset times, shows all your sessions and takes you back to them. A 7-day Pro trial starts by itself, once per Mac, without payment details. See plans or read how to install and set up Cowork Island.
